Lake Norman, Mountain Island Lake and Lake Wylie have over 900 miles of shoreline. This is more than the combined North and South Carolina coasts.
All 3 lakes have over 50,000 registered boats. In 2002, North Carolina had 17 fatal accidents and South Carolina had 15.
Lake Norman alone had 2 fatal boating accidents and 23 non-fatal boating accidents. The North Carolina coast only had 18 accidents.
Traditional volunteer boating organizations have limited resources. To reach the boating public and save lives, we need a full time safe boating school in the Carolinas and beyond the Lighthouse Marine Service, Inc.
